Today’s mechanical engineers use cutting-edge computing, smart sensors and electronic technology to design and manufacture automated products for the future. Science and technology will continue to expand, and so will the demand for skilled mechanical engineers.
Among the most diverse of the engineering fields, mechanical engineering affects almost all aspects of our lives and embraces many areas of specialization: automotive systems; bioengineering; combustion and propulsion; design methodology and tribology; dynamic systems and controls; energy systems and thermodynamics; fluid mechanics; heat transfer; manufacturing and production; materials behavior and processing; and microscale and nanoscale phenomena and systems.
The mechanical engineering program shall provide the students with an excellent foundation in the core technical competencies of the discipline: thermal and fluid sciences, mechatronics and robotics as the first two among a wider set of mechanical engineering disciplines that shall contain and not limited to thermal sciences and energy, mechatronics and robotics, solid mechanics and materials, material science and engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing technology and dynamics and control. Built upon these strengths is a very strong focus on application of these technical abilities through well-planned laboratory sequences. In addition, an array of technical electives is offered to enable students to tailor their mechanical engineering education to best suit their career goals.
The program provides an essential set of courses covering the fundamental basis for mechanical engineers targeting various career tracks. Two tracks are available for students (at the time being) to choose from; Mechatronics and Robotics, and Thermal Sciences and Energy.
With research emphasis in areas such as smart materials and structures, mechatronics and robotics and energy, the program is planned to strategically establish strong links with other engineering departments, centers and institutes. This interdisciplinary focus shall benefit students, faculty and the industry.
The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Nile University – School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is to provide a quality education, to establish strong research programs, to foster a close partnership with the industry, and to provide related services to the campus community and the community at large. The mission shall be guided by a commitment to continuous improvement in the overall quality of teaching, research and service.
To provide quality engineering education with sufficient scope to include the basic and specialized engineering training necessary for the current and emerging needs of society.
To contribute to the advancement of knowledge through dedicated research at the cutting edge of science and technology.
It is planned that the undergraduate program will become the core for an MSc and a PhD programs to be established in different mechanical engineering aspects. With the rapid advancement in science and technology, the Department also has a professional responsibility to provide continuing education to the effective practicing engineer.
To educate undergraduates in the basic principles and modern practices of the different fields of mechanical engineering targeted by the program and train students to think independently, to master the systematic approach to problem solving, and to have a keen awareness of the role of engineering in the modern technological society.
- Getting engaged in professional practice in entry-level engineering positions / enrolling in further engineering degree programs through rigorous instruction in the engineering sciences and extensive laboratory and design experience.
- Setting for successful careers and leadership positions building on integrated introduction to teamwork, communications, and problem-solving.
- Being prepared for a variety of careers resulting from the opportunity to deepen students’ technical understanding in a particular subject by a program of related technical electives or to obtain a broader education in engineering by a flexible choice of technical and free electives.
